Protein is an essential component of a healthy diet responsible for the maintenance of many bodily functions. It helps to build and repair muscle, organs, enzymes, hormones, as well as bones. High protein diets can also lead to loss of water from the body and put extra pressure on the kidneys for the excretion of excess protein, leading to dehydration.

  • Kidney damage

A diet with large amounts of protein can be damaging for people with preexisting kidney diseases. This is because damaged kidneys have to work harder to get rid of the extra nitrogen found in the amino acids that make up proteins. 

  • Calcium loss

A high protein diet is said to be associated with calcium loss. Calcium loss can then lead to many bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

  • Weight gain

Excess protein from the diet is stored inside the body as fat. This can result in the person actually gaining weight instead of losing it, in the long run!

  • Menstrual changes 

Since most high protein diets involve very little quantities of carbohydrates and other essential nutrients, they can cause an irregular menstrual cycle.
